About the Wayne County Democratic Party

Our mission is...

to strive for fair bipartisan government; local, state and national, that will improve the lives of all people. We want an economy that will allow all persons who are able and willing to work to have a means of earning a livable income for themselves and their families. We want good schools, fair housing, a healthy environment, with peace, justice and equality for all. We will work to elect Democrats and support issues to achieve these ends.

Location

The new Democratic headquarters is located in the old Kinder/Tyler House. It was moved from 220 N. Market St. 1½ blocks to its present location at 527 N. Market St. in 2000. Hugh Hothem of Hothem Realty purchased the property, saving it from the wrecking ball. His office is now located next door. The house has an interesting history. It was built in 1885 by William Tyler of Tyler Feed and Grain. Other owners/occupants throughout the years include the Lutheran Church, Veterans’ Services, the American Legion, Wayne County Soldiers’ Relief, the Wayne Insurance Association and, most recently, Dick Kinder Realty.

A notable feature is the John McSweeney Memorial Book Case. The book case is being used to house a lending library of politically themed books and biographies. Congressman John McSweeney, born in Wooster in 1890, served five terms in Congress between the years 1923 to 1951. He was a graduate of Wooster High School, fought in World War I, and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Croix de Guerre. He studied law at the Inns of Court in London, England and served on Wooster City Council.
